Brazilian Man Charged With Shoplifting From Walmart In Calvert County

DUNKIRK Md. — A man from Brazil has been charged with misdemeanor theft after deputies say he paid for only one item while concealing several others at the Walmart in Dunkirk earlier this month, according to charging documents filed in Calvert County District Court.

Avelino Tavares DaSilva Junior is charged with one count of theft: $100 to under $1,500 in connection with the Dec. 2 incident on Town Center Boulevard. A store asset protection employee told investigators he saw Junior scan a single clothing item at self-checkout while other merchandise was hidden from view.

Deputy Morgal stated that Junior, who presented a Brazilian passport, said he was in the United States for work and believed the situation was a misunderstanding. He also told the deputy he “makes money and does not need to steal.”

Items recovered, totaling $103.09, included:
• a pack of watch batteries
• a bag of Lay’s chips
• DayQuil liquid capsules
• Polysporin
• a PlayStation 5 controller
• a two-year security plan for the controller
• a U.S. Polo clothing item

Because Junior had recently arrived in the United States and did not have a permanent local address, he was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center before being released on his own recognizance following a bail review.

A trial is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2026, in Calvert County District Court.
