UPDATED TUESDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 2 AT 2:51 P.M.

On June 1 at 5:53 p.m. officers responded to the area of Rose Hill Road near Rose Hill Farm in Port Tobacco for the report of a single motor vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation showed the driver of a Saturn passenger car was travelling North on Rose Hill Road when he attempted to pass another vehicle. In doing so, the car struck a ditch and the driver lost control, striking a sign and an embankment.

A male passenger, Wade Lawrence Freeman, 23, of no fixed address was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene.

The driver, a 23-year-old male from La Plata and two other passengers – a 23-year-old female from La Plata and a 23-year-old female from Waldorf – were transported to a hospital where they were treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact PFC P. McPherson of the CCSO Traffic Operations Unit at (301) 609-3251.  The investigation is continuing.


UPDATED TUESDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 2 AT 12:15 P.M.

La Plata, MD – The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has clarified that it was a back-seat passenger who was ejected and killed in the June 1 early evening, single-vehicle accident in Port Tobacco, not the front-seat passenger as previously reported. According to Diane Richardson, all four occupants of the vehicle–two males and two females–were 23 years old. The male driver is from La Plata and the female passengers are from La Plata and Waldorf. All three remain hospitalized and will be interviewed by investigators.

The deceased male passenger had no fixed address.

No names have been released by police at this time.


UPDATED MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 1 AT 7:50 P.M.

Port Tobacco, MD – The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed one person is dead and three people have been hospitalized with injuries following a single-vehicle accident on Rose Hill Road in Port Tobacco.

According to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson, Monday, June 1 around 6 p.m. a Saturn was traveling northbound on Rose Hill Road when it attempted to pass a pickup truck, which was also traveling northbound. Richardson said the driver of the Saturn attempted to pass the truck by using the shoulder of the road. However, he lost control of the Saturn, which struck a sign and then an embankment. A front seat passenger was ejected when the collision occurred. The ejected passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passengers who had been sitting in the vehicle’s back seat were taken to the hospital with what are believed to be nonlife-threatening injuries.

Richardson said no names have been released at this time but the occupants of the Saturn all are believed to be in their 20s.
