Traffic Stop Near Great Mills Road Leads To Suspected Crack Cocaine, Smoking Device In Passenger’s Shoe

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Lexington Park man was charged after a traffic stop near Great Mills Road led deputies to suspected crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to charging documents.

Steve Lovell Thomas, 56, of Lexington Park, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance that was not cannabis and two counts of possession of CDS paraphernalia following the June 2, 2026, traffic stop.

The incident began when a St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a silver Mitsubishi Galant traveling on Great Mills Road near FDR Boulevard in Lexington Park. Charging documents state the vehicle failed to display registration tabs as required and did not have an outside mirror.

A traffic stop was conducted, and Thomas was identified as the front-seat passenger.

While confirming information from the driver and Thomas, a St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit arrived on scene. Both occupants were removed from the vehicle, and the K-9 conducted a free-air sniff, according to charging documents.

The K-9 gave a positive alert during the scan, leading deputies to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle.

During the search, deputies recovered a white rock suspected to be crack cocaine on the front passenger-side floorboard, near where Thomas had been seated. Deputies also recovered a silver spoon with white powder residue on the rear floorboard directly behind the front passenger seat, according to court documents.

Based on the items found within reach of Thomas, deputies searched him and located a glass smoking device with a burnt end and white residue inside his left shoe, charging documents state.

Deputies identified the white rock as suspected crack cocaine and the smoking device as suspected crack cocaine paraphernalia.

Thomas was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

Court records show Thomas was released after posting a $1,500 unsecured personal bond on June 2, 2026.

A trial is set for July 20 in St. Mary’s County District Court.
