LA PLATA, Md. — Firefighters responded to a rapidly spreading blaze Monday afternoon that destroyed multiple sheds, ignited several vehicles and burned nearly an acre of brush in Charles County.
The fire was reported around 1:18 p.m. on March 31, 2025, on Hawthorne Road in the area of Ripley Park Road in La Plata. When crews arrived, they found a shed fully engulfed in flames with fire spreading into nearby woods. At least two or three vehicles were also reported on fire.
First responders from multiple stations faced delays getting to the scene, and command requested the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to shut down the roadway for fire operations. Water supply was established from the nearby armory on Rose Hill Road.
Crews worked quickly to contain the fire, which had spread approximately 150 feet into the woods, eventually covering half an acre. Additional brush units and a forestry dozer were brought in to assist with containment. No injuries were reported, and the situation was brought under control without any threat to nearby homes.
As of 2:15 p.m., Hawthorne Road remains closed from Rose Hill Road and Marshall Corner Road intersection to Ripley Park Road for fire department operations. Please avoid the area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
