CALIFORNIA, Md. — An early evening encounter at a public park in California, Maryland, has led to criminal charges after witnesses reported an older man allegedly exposing himself before driving away. Investigators later traced the suspect through a temporary Maryland tag captured on video, leading to charges against a Callaway resident.
Wade Lynn Hampton, 73, of Callaway, has been charged with indecent exposure in connection with an incident that reportedly occurred on Dec. 29, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m. in a public park in California, Maryland. A summons was issued on Jan. 31, 2026. A preliminary hearing scheduled for March 20, 2026, has been waived, according to court records.
According to charging documents, victims reported that a blue GMC SUV pulled in front of them and flashed its headlights before moving into a parking space next to their vehicle. The victims told deputies that they then observed an older male with long dark hair and glasses sitting inside the SUV with his pants down, allegedly masturbating.
According to police reports, the victims recorded video of the SUV as it left the park and were able to capture a Maryland temporary registration tag. Investigators later used the tag information to identify the vehicle as being registered to Hampton through the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, according to charging documents.
Deputies made contact with Hampton at his residence, where he reportedly matched the description provided by the victims. Hampton allegedly told officers he had just returned home from work, claimed he did not know where the park was located, and stated that he had been at work the entire day, according to charging documents.
Police followed up with Hampton’s employer as part of the investigation. According to charging documents, a manager confirmed that Hampton worked that day but had left the workplace at approximately 5:30 p.m., returned around 6 p.m., and then departed for the day shortly after.
Hampton faces a charge of indecent exposure. Under Maryland law, indecent exposure is a misdemeanor offense that carries a potential penalty of up to three years in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted.
