PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert’s Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a $262,947 five-year contract for a digital evidence management software subscription, to be used by the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office, at their March 10 meeting.

This software, part of Axon Cloud Services, enables the State’s Attorney’s Office to electronically distribute court-ordered discovery materials to parties involved in specific cases. According to a memo submitted by Stephen Pereira, director of Technology Services, implementing this solution will generate significant cost savings for the county by “reducing expenses associated with bulk mailing of paper documents, purchasing external storage devices and related postage costs.”

This agreement will be for five years. Through a multi-year contract, Calvert County secures consistent pricing throughout the duration of the contract, ensuring both financial stability and operational efficiency.

The total cost of the contract is $262,947 for five years. The first-year payment will be $48,547.15 and is budgeted in the Capital Improvement Plan budget. Subsequent years will come out of the Technology Services budget.

State’s Attorney Bob Harvey explained how important digital software is in today’s world, when many pieces of evidence are digital. Harvey said that his office used to be able to put together envelopes and mail it to the defense team. Today, they’re going out and buying external hard drives to store videos and digital communication records.

“This technology is going to enable us to put everything into a system. We’re going to be able to store it there and keep it there so it’ll always be accessible.”

“It’s going to be of critical importance and will save us a lot of time,” Harvey added.

The BOCC approved the contract and subsequent renewals in a 5-0 vote.
