PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Department of Community Resources announced in a press release on Tuesday, Jan. 6, an award to support funding for a transitional housing site to help survivors of domestic violence.
According to the release, Calvert County has been awarded funding through the State Revitalization Programs to support projects that promote community development and economic growth.
As part of this funding, Calvert County will receive $300,000 to support planning for the housing project that focuses on survivors of domestic violence.
The funding will be used to develop a site plan for the Safe Transitional Housing for Survivors of Domestic Violence project. The project includes transitional housing units and a resource center designed to support individuals and families as they work toward long-term stability and independence.
The Department of Community Resources brought the project to the Board of County Commissioners in June. The housing units will be next door to Safe Harbor, a shelter that supports domestic violence survivors.
During the initial meeting, Director of Community Resources Jennifer Moreland explained that Safe Harbor is a great resource but is designed to only accommodate residents for up to 60 days. Survivors need more time and resources to fully get back on their feet. The transitional housing project will complement Safe Harbor to offer a more comprehensive range of services.
“This investment supports one of our community’s most critical needs,” Jennifer Moreland, director of community resources, said in a press release. “Safe, stable housing and access to services are essential for survivors of domestic violence as they rebuild their lives.”
As per the release, the State Revitalization Programs help local governments and organizations strengthen communities, improve quality of life and encourage economic growth across Maryland.
