PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, the retirement of K9 Reaper, a German shepherd who spent the past eight years serving the county alongside his handler, Cpl. Callison.
Reaper joined the agency in 2017 and quickly became a fixture in the K9 Unit. Officials said the dog was deployed for hundreds of searches, including vehicle sniffs that uncovered narcotics such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. He also assisted deputies in locating and apprehending suspects during criminal investigations.
Beyond enforcement work, Reaper often drew crowds during community demonstrations, where residents—especially children—saw firsthand how police dogs train and operate in the field. Those events, deputies said, helped strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the community.
Reaper will spend his retirement at home with Callison and his family, trading patrols and demonstrations for rest and playtime. The sheriff’s office credited the pair for their professionalism and dedication, saying their teamwork left a lasting impact on the department and the residents they served.
