The Calvert County Commissioners recognized the Department of Finance and Budgetโ€™s staff for earning the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the National Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This is the 11th year in a row Calvert County Government has won the award.

โ€œAs you are aware, the bond rating agencies look upon this award very favorably,โ€ stated Department of Finance and Budget Director Timothy Hayden.

According to a letter sent in November to the Joan T. Thorp, the departmentโ€™s deputy director, a panel of independent reviewers completed an examination of Calvert County Governmentโ€™s budget document and voted to give Calvert the award.

โ€œEach program participant is provided with confidential comments and suggestions for possible improvements to the budget document,โ€ state GFOA Technical Services Center Director Stephen J. Gauthier.

According to a GFOA press release, over 1,250 entities received the award.

โ€œItโ€™s quite an accomplishment,โ€ said Commissioner Pat Nutter [R], who thanked the Department of Finance and Budgetโ€™s staff for helping him understand the details of the countyโ€™s budget document.

โ€œItโ€™s a very small staff keeping a watch on about $300 million in spending,โ€ said Commissioner Susan Shaw [R].

County government is well into its fiscal year 2013 budget process. On April 24, the commissioners and several county government officials will go to New York City to meet with bond rating agencies.
