PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – Teams from Calvert County middle schools captured three of the top five spots in the annual tri-county Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) MathCounts competition held on February 3, 2018. Northern Middle brought home the first-place trophy, with Windy Hill finishing in fourth place and Plum Point in fifth. All three teams will advance to the state competition held on March 17 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “The MathCounts competition provides a venue for some of our top students to explore their interest in math and showcase their abilities. We thank SMECO for sponsoring this opportunity for our students.”
In addition to the team winners, students from all six middle schools advanced as individuals to the state competition.

Ryan Parker of Calvert Middle was the winner of the Countdown Round.
The team members are:

Northern—Mara Durham, Jack MacMillan, Kyle Page, and Aidan Smyth, coached by Carole Butler

Windy Hill—Addison Fortenbery, Koy Greenwell, Bradley LeFever, and Jasmine Simpson, coached by Tracy Greenwell

Plum Point—Emily Chan, Mick Gullace, Ian Hays, and Seth Hilton, coached by Dorinda Rice

The individual qualifiers are: Ryan Parker and Nikki Tjiputra (Calvert); Melvin Cheng (Mill Creek); Steven Vilcheck (Northern); Aiden McPhillips (Plum Point); Catie Roe and Kyle Wojciechowski (Southern); and Ahnaf Anowar, Jackson Goehle, Abby Spence, and Izzy Vasquez (Windy Hill).
