CHARLES COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS grew by only 76 students this school year, according to preliminary enrollment counts for the 2007-08 school year.
Total enrollment is 26,699, up from 26,623 students last school year. ย The increase is the lowest in two decades, a time when the school system experienced annual triple-digit enrollment gains.
The enrollment count, taken on Sept. 28, is not official until it receives final verification by the Maryland State Department of Education. ย Maryland school systems take official student counts for the year on the last school day in September.
Thomas Stone remains the largest high school in the county with 1,653 students, closely followed by North Point with 1,641 and Westlake with 1,616.
Theodore G. Davis MS, which opened this year, has the largest middle school enrollment with 1,088 students. ย Mattawoman MS has 988 students and John Hanson MSโs enrollment is 905 students. ย All three schools are in the Waldorf area.
Diggs Elementary has the highest elementary enrollment with 973 students. ย Wade and Berry elementary schools had 770 and 748 students respectively.
