LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Less than six months after he was caught flinging a digital scale with suspected crack cocaine residue out of a vehicle window during a traffic stop, 31-year-old Tavares Antonio Thompson of Chaptico has once again found himself at the center of a drug investigation involving suspected narcotics, paraphernalia and parole violations—all unfolding within arm’s reach of the front passenger seat. A second occupant—later charged with drug possession and paraphernalia—was behind the wheel.
The latest arrest occurred on May 16 around 12:30 a.m., when a St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop in the area of Great Mills Road and Australia Drive. The vehicle, a silver Chevrolet Cruze, had an inoperable tag light. According to court records, the driver was identified as 39-year-old Jessica Adele Kearney of Leonardtown. During the stop, deputies reported observing an object being thrown from the passenger-side window, which was later recovered and identified as a digital scale bearing suspected cocaine residue.
Kearney and Thompson were both charged after deputies discovered multiple drug-related items throughout the vehicle.
Thompson, the front seat passenger, already had an active warrant for violating probation tied to a prior conviction involving crack cocaine possession. A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered textbook indicators of narcotics use and possible distribution. Deputies recovered a plastic smoking device with suspected crack cocaine residue under the driver’s seat. A handbag nearby contained two hypodermic needles, foil, folded papers with powdery residue and a metal spoon. Another metal smoking device was found between the driver’s seat and center console. A plastic bag containing a green-yellow rock substance—presumptively tested and confirmed as cocaine base—was discovered in the center console.
Thompson allegedly admitted to owning the glass smoking device found in his jacket and the digital scale, stating he uses both to smoke crack cocaine. He denied knowledge of the other items found, though investigators noted all were within the shared area between Thompson and the driver.
Both individuals were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. Thompson was served his active warrant and charged with three counts of drug possession (not cannabis) and three counts of possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. Kearney was charged with the same six misdemeanors and released on her own recognizance. Her court date is scheduled for July 1.
Thompson had previously been sentenced in December 2024 to one year in jail, with all but 90 days suspended, followed by two years of supervised probation. Court records show he was under supervision when arrested. A bench warrant issued April 29 for probation violation was served at the time of the stop.
He appeared before Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser on May 19 for a bond review and was ordered held without bond. A violation of probation hearing is scheduled for June 24 in District Court.
If convicted, Thompson faces additional jail time on the new charges, as well as possible revocation of his suspended sentence from the prior case.
