CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — A wind-driven fire tore through a Chesapeake Beach apartment building early Monday, displacing about two dozen residents and causing an estimated $1.5 million in damage, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Around 6:36 a.m. on Nov. 17, 2025, fire crews from Calvert County and neighboring jurisdictions were dispatched to the 3900 block of Gordon Stinnett Avenue for reports of a building on fire. Firefighters arrived to find flames racing through the courtyard and pushing into the attic before breaking through the roof.

Fourteen apartments were destroyed, and roughly 25 occupants were forced from their homes, investigators said. All residents were accounted for; one person was taken to a hospital for treatment. Contents inside the affected units sustained an additional $250,000 in estimated losses.

Deputy State Fire Marshals concluded the blaze began on a first-level balcony in the courtyard. The fire’s position outside the structure, combined with high winds, helped it spread quickly and intensify damage throughout the building.

A preliminary review found no evidence of criminal activity.

All fire companies in Calvert County, including the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office assisted with scene security and the investigation, while the American Red Cross worked with displaced residents to arrange emergency assistance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
