Chesapeake Beach Launches First Walking Path In New Community Initiative

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Chesapeake Beach has taken a step toward promoting healthy living and community engagement with the launch of its first marked walking path, the North Path of the Bay and Blossoms Walking Trails. This 1.6-mile route connects key landmarks in the town and features brass markers and painted blue fish for guidance. Designed to be both practical and visually appealing, the path is already gaining attention from residents and visitors alike.

The project was spearheaded by the town’s Walkable Community Committee, which included Councilwoman Margaret “Peggy” Hartman, who took inspiration from the American Walking College. Hartman explained, “The idea is simple—if you give people places to walk, they will use them. This path links several of our pocket parks, gardens, and other features, making it easier for everyone to enjoy what our town has to offer.”

The Path’s Route and Features
The new path begins at Kellam’s Recreation Area and winds through several neighborhoods, making stops at Shisler Park, Veterans Park, and the North Beach Firehouse. Highlights include environmentally friendly rain gardens designed to filter water runoff and scenic views of the Chesapeake Bay, enhancing both the ecological and scenic value of the trail.

Brass markers guide walkers along the trail, while painted blue fish markers fill in longer stretches. Hartman, who collaborated with Public Works Director Jay Berry, shared, “We wanted the markers to be engaging, especially for kids. It’s like a scavenger hunt as you follow the trail.”

Challenges and Future Plans
Like any community project, the walking path faced challenges, particularly with signage placement. Ground-level markers were chosen to ensure clear visibility while maintaining the area’s natural beauty. Despite these hurdles, the walking path has been warmly received as a valuable addition to the town.

This path is the first of three planned routes, though the timeline for the next phases depends on approval from the new town administration. Hartman and co-coordinator Council Vice President Charlie Fink remain optimistic about future developments. “We’ve already mapped the next trails and plan to use a new color scheme for the fish markers to distinguish them,” Hartman noted.

Encouraging a Walkable Community
The project has garnered support from organizations like America Walks, a nonprofit dedicated to helping communities implement walking initiatives. Hartman encourages other towns to pursue similar projects. “America Walks is a great resource for planning and community engagement,” she said.

With its thoughtful design and community-centered approach, the Chesapeake Beach walking path reflects the town’s commitment to fostering a healthier, more connected community. As plans for expansion progress, residents can look forward to exploring even more scenic trails in the near future.
