Initial enrollees will be students entering the ninth grade in the 2008-09 school year. Admission criteria will include a 2.0 grade point average, two letters of recommendation from teachers and a writing sample.
The Academy, a signature program of Superintendent of Schools Michael J. Martirano, will provide students with focused instruction in the financial services industry. Students will learn about financial careers including banking, insurance, financial planning, business administration, sales, contract oversight, budget analysis, and advertising. There will be classroom, field and internship opportunities, and the program will incorporate extra curricular programs related to the career interests of students such as the Future Business Leaders of America.
Business and community partners will serve as members of the Program Advisory Council, which will provide curriculum feedback, guest speakers, field experiences and opportunities for internships.
Academy courses will be part of a studentโs regular graduation requirements. In addition to courses, students will complete a summer internship following grade 11 and a senior capstone project. A college level course is required in grade 12.
An application process will be used to enroll students and determine student transfers. Students from Great Mills High School and Leonardtown High School will be able to transfer to the Academy. Transportation logistics will be determined pending student registration. Details will be finalized once enrollment is confirmed.
