CALIFORNIA, Md. — A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect across the Maryland region as an Arctic air mass continues to bring dangerously cold conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory, issued at 7:12 a.m. EST Wednesday, Jan. 28, is in effect through 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, with a brief lull expected midday Wednesday before another round of hazardous cold returns Wednesday evening. Wind chills could drop as low as 8 degrees below zero.
The advisory covers portions of Washington, D.C., much of Maryland — including central, southern, and northeastern areas — as well as northern and western Virginia. Forecasters warn that prolonged exposure to the cold could result in frostbite or hypothermia, particularly for those without adequate shelter or protective clothing.
In response to the cold snap, local governments and community organizations across Southern Maryland have opened warming centers to provide heated shelter. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to contact county emergency management agencies or local health departments for information on locations and hours of operation.
In addition to the extreme cold, the National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement at 8:51 a.m. warning of a potential impact to the Wednesday evening commute. A period of light snow is possible between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a 30 percent chance of accumulation across the Washington metropolitan area into central and southern Maryland. Snow totals, if they occur, are expected to range from a coating to around one-half inch.
Forecasters caution that even light snowfall during the evening rush hour could quickly lead to slick and snow-covered roads, especially on untreated surfaces, creating hazardous travel conditions. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and consider public transportation or telework options if possible.
The National Weather Service says additional cold weather headlines remain possible through the end of the week as the region stays locked in Arctic air.
