ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – As the St. Mary’s County Circuit Court Judgeship election approaches, Amy Lorenzini and Sue Ann Armitage find themselves in a heated dispute that has captivated public attention.
In the final stretch of the campaign, Armitage’s campaign materials stirred controversy by criticizing Lorenzini’s judicial record. At the heart of the debate is a sentencing case involving convicted rapist Jacy Brice Torres Ponce. Armitage’s mailer, distributed just before the election, accuses Lorenzini of leniency in her ruling, linking it to subsequent criminal acts and a tragic outcome.
Lorenzini imposed a twenty-year prison sentence but suspended the majority, leaving Ponce with only 18 months to serve.
Armitageโs flyer called Lorenzini’s ruling reckless, asserting that it endangered an innocent child. She argued that Lorenzini strayed from sentencing guidelines for forcible rape, which typically recommend imprisonment ranging from five to 10 years in the state of Maryland.
Lorenzini has defended her decisions, arguing that they are made after careful consideration of the facts and law. She has dismissed Armitage’s accusations as โan egregious ethical violationโ and will be filing a complaint with the attorney ethics committee according to a mass text received by voters from Lorenziniโs campaign on May 7.
In the victimโs statement, provided by the Maryland Crime Victimsโ Resource Center, she describes the devastating impact of the assault and the emotional toll of testifying in court. She expresses her dismay at Judge Lorenzini’s lenient sentencing, which she believes prioritized the comfort of her assailant over her pursuit of justice.
In her own words, she declares, “Judge Amy Lorenzini enables the powerful to be excused from their crimes and punishes the vulnerable who challenge the status quo. I trusted Judge Amy Lorenzini for justice and she sacrificed me for political gains.โ
The community is divided on the issue, with some calling for stricter sentencing and greater accountability, while others support Lorenzini’s approach. This controversy highlights how challenging it can be for judges to make decisions, especially when there are so many different variables at play.
We have reached out to Judge Lorenzini for a statement and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.

Unfortunately, the defendant, who was also a victim, is unable to share his side of the story. However, his family AND a juror from the case BOTH came out to vote for Judge Amy Lorenzini because they were disgusted by Sue Annโs attack without herself knowing the full truth. Yes, you read that right, a JUROR!
Can you explain how the Defendant was a victim? I would like the back story to that comment.
The rapist was a victim??
Armitage stood up for what was right and had he served the time he was meant to serve, victims would have been saved
As someone who knows the full truth, he victimized others and had the proper ruling been carried out multiple victims would have been spared
Raping a minor is disgusting
How is a rapist a VICTIM??
If Armitage was called to be a judge why never bother handling any criminal work. It’s part of the judges duties and to dismiss it as a small part of the job since it’s clear she was never interested in practicing is interesting.
Amy Lorenzini just sentenced the Hollywood carnival shooter to life, with no parole. I’d say that’s strict sentencing. Sue Ann is choosing to smear Amy now, at the very last minute of the campaign, to try to get undecided voters. She will (and has) tried anything to win this election, regardless of the integrity and ethics that is to be expected of Judges AND candidates for Judge.
It’s a tough decision because they are both hot.
hahahahah
This is seriously disappointing. Judges are expected to be fair, impartial, and honest. They are held to a higher standard of behavior than politicians, yet here we have two of them playing politics publicly. This type of behavior is beneath them both.
exactly. fair and impartial. they are now being politician and mean. not judle like for either.
What’s wrong with defending your record? Amy has done nothing mean or wrong.
I am surprised that such a small portion of the victim’s response, the entirety of which was posted in the comments on the Facebook post with this article, was shared in this piece. Since no one news organization has published the victim’s statement, it would be prudent to share her full statement here, or at least publish it alongside this article. It would also be useful to have the Armitage campaign mailers and Amy Lorenzini’s response appended to this article, so that we readers can determine for ourselves how valid/strong the points made in these campaign materials are.
I am also a bit taken aback by the cursory summary of Amy Lorenzini’s text statement, especially since it directly defames the victim in this case, which is why the victim released a statement in the first place.
Here’s your problem MBB, you don’t know anything about the case. I’m not attacking you, but the specifics are laid out factually as a response to Sue Ann’s last ditch, failed effort, as Judge Amy Lorenzini has won this race. Sue Ann needs to be disbarred for this or at least disciplined.
You all will be alright from all of this banter. Take 2 cookies and go get some sleep.
