COSMIC Symphony, Southern Marylandโs only community orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Vladimir Lande, announces Julia Henderson and Jessica and Katelyn Lyons as the 2009 Young Artist Competition Winners.ย Winners receive a $100 savings bond and the opportunity to perform their winning piece with COSMIC Symphony at COSMICโs February Family Concert.ย Julia will perform the 1st movement of Dvorakโs Cello Concerto in B Minor.ย Jessica and Katelyn will perform J.C. Bachโs Double Violin Concerto.
The Family Concert entitled Surprises, will be held at 7 pm on Saturday, February 28th at Great Mills High School and at 4 pm, on Sunday March 1st at Huntingtown High School.ย In addition to the competition pieces, the orchestra will also perform Darius Milhaudโs Creation of the World and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoffโs Capriccio Espaรฑole for Orchestra.ย
Julia Henderson is a homeschooled 11th grader and has been studying cello for 7 years and currently studies privately with Loran Stephenson, of the National Symphony Orchestra.ย She is in her 2nd year as a National Symphony Youth Fellow and has performed several times at the Kennedy Center as a soloist and as a member of the Youth Orchestra Day Symphony.ย Julia has spent the last two summers at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in Michigan, where she won an achievement award for cello.ย A member of COSMIC Symphony for 5 years, Julia recently joined the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra in Fairfax, VA and is co-assistant principal cellist there.ย For college, Julia plans to attend a music conservatory and major in cello performance.

Jessica Lyons (age 13) and Katelyn Lyons (age 11) are the daughters of Jennifer and David Lyons of Hollywood, MD and attend Leonardtown Middle School.
Jessica began playing the violin when she was 4 1/2 years old, with her mother as her teacher and currently studies with Holly Hamilton, first violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra.ย Jessica has competed in several competitions in the Washington D.C. area and internationally.
Jessica gave several recitals in France in August 2008.ย She plays first violin in the COSMIC Symphony and was a winner of the 2007 Young Artist Concerto Competition soloing with COSMIC in February, 2007 at age 11.ย Jessica is also concert master with the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra in Annapolis and the first place winner of the 2008 CYSO Young Artist Competition.
Katelyn began playing the violin at age 2 1/2 and also studies with Holly Hamilton of the National Symphony Orchestra. She performed with the Chesapeake Youth Chamber Orchestra in France this past summer.ย She is in the Chesapeake Youth Symphony in Annapolis, MD and will be accompanying Jonathan Carney, concert master of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, as he plays the Bruch Violin Concerto in March 2009. Katelyn plays second violin with COSMIC Symphony.
