WALDORF, Md. — An Upper Marlboro woman is facing multiple drug and impaired-driving charges after a traffic stop in Charles County led to her arrest early Christmas Eve, according to charging documents.

Court records show Cora Elizabeth Wood, 61, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance not marijuana, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol, driving while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance, and speeding.

According to a statement of probable cause, a Charles County sheriff’s deputy observed a blue Hyundai Elantra traveling 72 mph in a posted 45 mph zone shortly before 3 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2025, near Crain Highway and Substation Road in Waldorf. The deputy initiated a traffic stop after confirming the speed using radar.

Investigators reported that Wood showed signs of impairment, including bloodshot and glassy eyes and the odor of alcohol. Officers also noted the smell of perfume or cologne, which they stated is sometimes used to mask the odor of alcohol.

Wood agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, during which officers documented multiple indicators of impairment, including difficulty maintaining balance, swaying, and improper turning. She was subsequently placed under arrest.

A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed open containers of alcohol and a tied-off piece of plastic containing a white powdery substance. A field test later indicated the substance tested positive for cocaine hydrochloride, a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance.

Court records state Wood declined to submit to a chemical test, citing narcotics in her system. She was transported to the Charles County Detention Center without incident.

Wood was released later that day on an unsecured personal bond of $1,500, according to court records. A trial is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
