The Annual Cruisin’ Southern Maryland for Veterans has raised more than $120,000 for the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in 8 years and will hand the veterans home approximately $26,000 this year.

The 8th Annual Cruisin’ SoMD for Veterans stopped into Fox Run Shopping Center in Prince Frederick, May 25, along its 100-plus mile route where spoke to participants and members of the event.

“All the proceeds go to the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home (in St. Mary’s County),” said Chip Powell, a member of Cruisin’ SoMD and a classic car enthusiast. “(My family) started participating after our sons’ boy scout troop volunteered at the event 5-years ago.”

Chip Powell is also a Navy Veteran and is pictured with his 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

“We had our first show of the season a few weeks ago,” said John Parlett, a spokesperson for Cruisin’ SoMD. “We still have more events to come.”

Cruisin’ Southern Maryland will have two more car show events next weekend, June 8 and 9, and then another in September.

“Charlotte Hall Veterans Home is the only veterans home in Maryland,” Parlett said. “The veterans home is the last stop and the veterans come out and judge to pick their favorite cars.”

Parlett explained that the route.

“It starts in Charlotte Hall then over the Patuxent River and up through Calvert to Upper Marlboro where the group comes back south to its first stop for lunch and ‘pop-up car show’ at St. Charles Town Center Mall,” he said.

He went onto say that once lunch concludes, the group continues south to Target in La Plata, by way of Indian Head, for a second pop-up car show.

He said, “After the pop-up car show in La Plata, (the group takes) a final afternoon drive back to Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to meet with veterans and have the Veteran’s Choice Award.

He said the car show events are a great way to not only share a passion of cars but to fuel the passion for raising money for a great cause.

Cruisin’ SOMD is an all-volunteer organization and throughout the year, they have monthly meetings to plan the events that the organization hosts.
