MINNEAPOLIS โ€” Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer known for causing the death of George Floyd last May, has been found guilty on all charges filed against him. Chauvin was specifically found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

Chauvin was placed in handcuffs and taken away shortly after the verdict from the jury. His jail time could extend as far as 40 years for second-degree murder, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. Minnesota’s guidelines for sentencing include recommendations of about 12.5 years per murder charge and about four years for the manslaughter charge.

The state’s prosecution has asked for a tougher sentencing due to the circumstances surrounding the case. A final determination will be made in the next eight weeks.

It took the jury a total of 10 hours to reach its final verdict.
