Waldorf Man Charged After Deputies Allege He Left 6-Year-Old Child Home Alone

WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing a misdemeanor child neglect-related charge after a Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputy alleged he left a young child home alone while going to work, according to court documents.

Alexis Sanchez, 32, of Waldorf, was charged in the District Court for Charles County with one count of confining an unattended child, a misdemeanor. The charge was filed July 16, 2026, through a statement of charges application, meaning the case was initiated through the court rather than by an on-view arrest.

According to the application for statement of charges, a Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded at approximately 1:28 p.m. July 14 to a residence in Waldorf to conduct a welfare check on two children. The children’s mother told authorities she believed Sanchez had taken the children from Florida to Maryland and reported they were frequently left home alone, prompting concerns for their safety and well-being.

When the deputy arrived, investigators made contact with the two children, ages 9 and 6. According to charging documents, the children reported their father had left for work at approximately 6 a.m. and that they were alone when deputies arrived several hours later. Court records state the older child told investigators the children were regularly left unattended and were expected to feed and care for themselves while Sanchez was away.

While conducting the welfare check, the responding deputy documented the living conditions inside the residence. According to the application, the children and Sanchez shared a single bedroom containing an air mattress, a roll of toilet paper, several empty beer bottles, a small amount of clothing stored in a closet and a few toys. The deputy also noted the room had a strong odor and contained little furniture beyond the air mattress.

Based on the children’s statements and the conditions observed, the deputy alleged Sanchez repeatedly left the children unattended for extended periods, failed to provide adequate supervision and maintained living conditions inconsistent with their safety and welfare. The criminal charge filed in District Court specifically alleges Sanchez knowingly left a 6-year-old child, who was under the age of 8, confined in a dwelling and outside the sight of a person at least 13 years old.

A summons was issued July 16, 2026. Sanchez is scheduled to appear for a preliminary inquiry Aug. 31, 2026, in Charles County District Court.

Under Maryland Family Law § 5-801, a person responsible for the care of a child younger than 8 may not knowingly leave the child confined in a dwelling or outside the child’s sight without reliable supervision by an individual who is at least 13 years old.
