
LA PLATA, Md. — A detached garage sustained an estimated $70,000 in damage during a fire Friday night in the 10400 block of La Plata Road.
The fire was reported at approximately 8:45 p.m. July 24, 2026, after occupants of the nearby home smelled smoke and noticed the glare of flames outside.
Firefighters arrived to find the 40-by-30-foot detached garage fully involved and already collapsed. Crews established a defensive operation and deployed four handlines to contain and extinguish the fire while protecting the nearby home.

The La Plata Volunteer Fire Department responded with assistance from surrounding departments. A total of 54 firefighters brought the one-alarm fire under control in approximately 45 minutes.
The fire was confined to the garage and did not spread to the nearby residence. Crews remained at the scene for approximately three hours conducting extinguishment and overhaul operations.
No injuries were reported.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal estimated damage at $50,000 to the structure and $20,000 to its contents. No smoke alarm was present in the garage.
Investigators determined the fire originated inside the garage. The cause remains under investigation.
