
ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — March will be a busy month at Historic St. Mary’s City, with registration openings, family-friendly programs and the start of the 2026 season in Maryland’s first capital.
Registration opens March 3 for the museum’s Spring Break programs and Homeschool Workshops. Officials encourage early sign-ups, noting that hands-on history experiences fill quickly. Details are available at www.hsmcdigshistory.org.
On March 8, the Historic State House will host a Wedding Expo from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees can meet wedding professionals offering venues, gowns, photography, catering, music and more. The museum’s book club will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the Visitor Center Auditorium to discuss “Spitfire” by Becky Aikman, a nonfiction account exploring the true stories of women pilots who flew missions during World War II. The program is free and open to the public.
Registration for May public sails aboard the Maryland Dove opens March 17. Sail dates are May 9 and May 23 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with rain dates scheduled for May 16 and May 30. The two-hour experience on the wooden vessel, inspired by the 1634 Dove, takes place on the St. Mary’s River. The program is open to ages 5 and older. Also on March 17, Historic St. Mary’s City outdoor exhibits open for the 2026 season from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $10 for ages 6-18. Children 5 and younger and members are admitted free.

A Spring Scavenger Hunt is set for March 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families can pick up a scavenger hunt booklet at the Visitor Center during check-in and explore the grounds in search of signs of spring. The booklet is included with general admission.

Guided tours will also be offered March 21. Ghost Frame Tours begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., giving visitors an up-close look at the wooden outlines that mark the locations of 17th-century buildings uncovered through archaeology. A Changing Landscapes Tour is scheduled for March 21 and March 28 at 1 p.m. The hourlong program explores discoveries at St. Mary’s Fort and sites reflecting more than 8,000 years of Native presence, including interactions between Indigenous communities and European settlers in the 1600s. Tour participants should be prepared to walk over uneven terrain, including an active excavation site. Tours are $5 per participant, with children 6 and younger admitted free. Space is limited, and registration is required upon admission purchase.
Little Explorers: Maryland Day will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at State House Bluff. Designed for preschool learners ages 3-5 and their accompanying adults, the program blends storytelling, movement, play and discovery to explore Maryland’s history. Cost is $4 per child and $3 for members, with one adult admitted free. Additional spring dates are April 8, April 22, May 6 and May 20.
Homeschool Day: A Day in the Life will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27. Families can explore all four exhibit areas through hands-on activities focused on Maryland’s early history. The program is included with general admission, and no registration is required.

The month concludes with Breakfast With the Animals from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation. Participants will help feed the animals, learn about their care and enjoy a guided morning tour as the museum opens for the day. The program is open to all ages and costs $15 for the public and $10 for members. Children 2 and younger are admitted free. Space is limited, and preregistration with full payment is required by emailing hsmcc.groups@maryland.gov or calling 301-994-4372.
