Dr. Jack Smith
Rockville, MD – It appears likely that former Calvert County School Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith will be assuming leadership of another highly touted Maryland school system. On online edition of the Washington Post reported Thursday, Feb. 4 that Smith, who is currently serving as Marylandโs interim state superintendent of schools is about to be announced as Montgomery Countyโs new school chief. The paper cites โtwo people with knowledge of the selection processโ as its source.
Smith served as Calvert Countyโs school superintendent for seven years before suddenly resigning during the summer of 2013. Prior to his tenure Smith served three years as deputy superintendent. Smith, who came to Calvert County during the late 1990s, served as a school principal in the county as well as six years at a school in Tokyo, Japan.
Days after announcing his departure from Calvert, Smith was named chief academic officer for the Maryland State Department of Education. Following the abrupt departure of Maryland Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian M. Lowery last September, the Maryland Board of Education named Smith the interim superintendent.
Smith was named Marylandโs Superintendent of the Year for 2013 in the fall of 2012 by the Public School Superintendentsโ Association of Maryland.
Montgomery County officials have been conducting a search for a new superintendent for nearly a year.
