Feed The Birds, Snap A Photo, Says Southern Maryland Audubon

SOUTHERN MARYLAND — A winter storm is on the way, and while most of us are bundling up and hunkering down indoors, our backyard birds are about to face the snow without so much as a coat or cocoa. Southern Maryland Audubon Society is asking residents to help these feathered friends weather the cold by keeping feeders full and snapping a few photos of the visitors that stop by.

During icy weather, birds often struggle to find food. Snow covers natural sources, and feeders can become lifelines for species like cardinals, juncos, chickadees, and woodpeckers. Even a handful of seed can make a difference during a storm.

The Southern Maryland Audubon Society is encouraging the community to observe birds from their windows and share photos of what they see. The best snapshots may be selected for the Society’s 2026 holiday card.

If you want to take birdwatching a step further, the annual Great Backyard Bird Count is right around the corner. From Feb. 13–16, 2026, bird lovers of all ages can participate by counting birds for just 15 minutes and submitting their sightings online. It’s a simple way to contribute to global science—right from your backyard.

In addition to encouraging participation in the bird count, Southern Maryland Audubon Society offers a full calendar of events throughout the year—welcoming nature lovers, families, and curious beginners to explore birds, conservation, and local habitats.
