‘Feels Like 10 Below’: Another Shot Of Arctic Air Keeps Southern Maryland Locked In Deep Freeze

CALIFORNIA, Md. – A Cold Weather Advisory remained in effect across Southern Maryland and the broader Mid-Atlantic as dangerously low wind chills pushed well below zero and temperatures continue.

The National Weather Service said Arctic air settling over the region is producing wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero early Friday, with even colder conditions expected overnight into Saturday morning. A second advisory takes effect Friday evening, with wind chills potentially dropping to 10 below zero in some locations.

In Southern Maryland, including Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, actual air temperatures were expected to hover in the teens Friday, with daytime highs failing to reach 25 degrees. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the single digits, with strong northwest winds making it feel significantly colder.

Forecasters warned that exposed skin could develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes under the coldest conditions. Prolonged exposure to the extreme wind chills also increases the risk of hypothermia, particularly for those without adequate winter clothing or shelter.

The advisory covers Washington, D.C., central, northern and southern Maryland, as well as northern Virginia. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, hats and gloves, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors are protected from the cold.

The second Cold Weather Advisory is set to remain in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday, with gradual moderation expected later in the weekend.
