Dowell, MD – Perfect weather along with the full blossoming of spring greeted attendees to Calvert County’s seventh annual Green Expo and Craft Fair Saturday, May 2. The event was a presentation of the Calvert County Citizens Green Team, an 11-member group represented by several entities, including county government, public schools, Calvert Library, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, Calvert County Master Gardeners and a representative from the venue—Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center.

Nearly 80 vendors—including five public schools and one private school—conducted demonstrations, registered patrons for door prizes, served food and supervised children’s games throughout the six-hour event. There was also live musical entertainment.

Young and old learned about various items that can be recycled, saving water, the benefits of buying local food, saving energy at home, “green” products sold at local stores, renewable energy sources, how to reduce emissions from cars and reusable items that can be donated to Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center’s Art Lab.

Calvert County Master Gardeners conducted two backyard composting demonstrations during the exposition.

There was a layer of potential controversy at the Green Expo which proved to be a non-issue. We are Cove Point, a group opposed to the Dominion Cove Point Liquefied Natural Gas Exportation project, was a vendor at the event, which was sponsored, in part, by Dominion.

Other sponsors were SMECO, Bayside Auto Group, The Calvert County Commissioners, Chesapeake Bounty, Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust, Tri-County Council of Southern Maryland, Quality Built Homes Inc., Sneade’s Ace Home Center, PNC Bank, Solar Tech Inc., Calvert Smiles, and Ruddy Duck Brewery and Grill.
