NEWBURG, Md. — Firefighters spent Wednesday night into early Thursday morning battling flames at a large barn in Newburg that rekindled just hours after crews left the scene.

The initial alarm came in around 10:09 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, for a reported working fire in the 10000 block of Benton Road. Battalion chiefs arriving minutes later reported a 100-by-75-foot metal butler building fully involved, with flames visible throughout the structure. Units established a water supply task force, using Aqua Land Marina as the primary fill site, and shifted into a defensive attack to keep the blaze contained.

Crews worked for more than three hours, cycling water tankers and battling through the night until about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when the incident was scaled back and units began clearing.

But before sunrise, at about 6:52 a.m. Oct. 2, a resident called 911 again to report heavy flames inside a section of the barn that had not burned during the overnight fire. Dispatchers sent multiple stations back just before 7 a.m., with arriving units finding two rooms fully involved on the rear, or “Charlie side,” of the structure. Firefighters requested farm equipment be moved to allow truck access and staged additional units nearby while engines and tankers worked the rekindled blaze.

No injuries were reported in either incident. Fire investigators are expected to return to the scene to determine a cause and assess damage.
