WELCOME, Md. — Fire and rescue crews responded Friday afternoon to a boat fire at the dock at Goose Bay Marina and Campground, where a single vessel burned at the end of a pier.
The call went out at 3:55 p.m. Nov. 28 for “several boats and the dock on fire, spreading rapidly” in the 9300 block of Goose Bay Lane. A 911 caller reported the fire was still spreading because of the wind.
Additional callers reported at least one boat on fire and heavy smoke in the area.
Firefighters arrived to find one boat burning at the end of a pier and directed tankers to stage near a nearby store while crews operated from the floating dock.
Command later said the starboard side of the roughly 25-foot vessel had burned down to the waterline. Six firefighters were reported operating from the pier, and crews did not enter the boat.
The incident commander requested the marina’s boat-lift operator and owner respond to determine whether the vessel could be brought onto land to finish extinguishment. The lift operator agreed, and a fireboat was used to tow the vessel to another dock so it could be moved onto shore.
Multiple engines, tankers, specialty units and marine resources were dispatched. Several units were held in staging or released once command advised only a limited number of apparatus were needed to continue operations and for safety coverage. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources was notified and sent a unit to assist.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal was requested to the scene. Crews were asked to determine whether the boat had been plugged in before the fire as part of the origin-and-cause review.
No injuries were immediately reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
