WALDORF, Md. — A family-operated Mexican restaurant is planning to open in Waldorf after receiving approval for a new alcoholic beverage license from the Charles County Board of License Commissioners.
Taqueria Y Rosticeria El Rey 2 LLC, trading as Taqueria Y Rosticeria El Rey 2, was granted a Class B (restaurant) on-sale alcoholic beverage license for 2140 Old Washington Road — the former BB&T Bank building — along the Route 301 corridor. The applicant was represented by David Martinez, Esq.
During the hearing, the applicant said he and his father are converting the former BB&T Bank building into an authentic Mexican restaurant as part of their expansion.
“Pretty much we’re going to convert the bank into an authentic Mexican restaurant,” he told the board. “We have locations down in Riverdale and we are looking to expand and we like the area and we want to give it a try in this area, you know, show the people what we can bring to the table.”
The Waldorf restaurant will follow the same traditional Mexican concept as their Riverdale location. Officials described it as a full-service, sit-down restaurant with no standalone bar. Alcohol will be served by table service only.
At their Riverdale location, the menu offers a wide variety of traditional Mexican favorites, including tacos such as carne asada, al pastor, lengua and carnitas, along with tortas, quesadillas, huaraches and hearty platters like milanesa and chilaquiles. The restaurant is also known for its pollo rostisado, served in full, half or quarter portions with sides such as rice, beans, fries or salad.
The proposed hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
The applicant said he has grown up in the restaurant business and has been actively involved for years, including handling payroll, deposits, deliveries and day-to-day operations. He plans to be at the Waldorf location daily during the initial launch.
He anticipates hiring between eight and 10 employees to start. Estimated occupancy is approximately 40 patrons, pending final fire marshal approval.
The board approved the license contingent upon issuance of a Use and Occupancy permit and final health department approval. Commissioners also granted a 120-day extension for the applicant to complete renovations and pick up the license.
“They want to be open as soon as they can,” Martinez told the board, noting the timeline will depend on final inspections and county approvals.
The project marks the adaptive reuse of the former BB&T Bank building in one of Waldorf’s busiest commercial areas, bringing a new family-operated Mexican restaurant to Old Washington Road once final approvals are secured.
