CALIFORNIA, Md. — Nicoletti’s Pizza isn’t just serving pies — it’s serving memories. For 44 years, the family-run restaurant has been part of everyday life in Southern Maryland, feeding generations of families while hosting milestones big and small. Last week, the California pizzeria marked its 44th anniversary with an outpouring of love and memories from the community.
They shared their anniversary with the community by saying, “We’ve been open for 44 years. That’s like, 200 in restaurant years! We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for your loyalty and support.”
Nicoletti’s then invited the community to celebrate alongside them and share favorite moments from over the years. Stories poured in on social media — from first dates and first jobs to family traditions and milestones.
One mother recalled bringing her newborn son to Nicoletti’s in 2000, saying the smell of pizza may explain why it’s still his favorite food today. Another family remembered holding their baby up next to a Nicoletti’s pizza to compare sizes. Others fondly described shelves of toys and Trivial Pursuit cards that once kept kids entertained, while longtime fans recounted birthday parties, wedding rehearsal dinners and after-game banquets that made the restaurant a gathering place for every stage of life.
For some, the memories were behind the counter. One former employee said her very first job was at Nicoletti’s, where she worked every station and even made deliveries. Her lasting lesson? Don’t let founder Bruce Nicol catch you chewing gum while on the clock.
From Humble Beginnings to a Hometown Staple
Nicoletti’s Pizza began in 1981, when Bruce Nicol opened one of Southern Maryland’s first family-run pizzerias with just a few pieces of used equipment and a rental space in the Hickory Hills Shopping Center. With the help of family members and a passion for bringing quality pizza to the area, Nicoletti’s quickly became a local favorite.
Today, thanks to the efforts of Bruce’s son and current owner Ryan Nicol, Nicoletti’s has grown into a hometown staple. Its large dining room and private party spaces have made it a go-to spot for sports teams, family events and community gatherings year after year. For many, it’s the place they loved coming to as kids — and the place they now bring their own children.
