ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. — Maryland District 29B candidate BJ Hall joined host Chris Hill on “Get Real With Southern Maryland Politics” to discuss rural representation, energy costs, housing challenges and state spending.
Hall boasts a background in engineering, economics and project management that shapes his approach to policy. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Hall has lived in Southern Maryland for about 11 years. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with degrees in engineering and economics and later earned an MBA from the University of Alabama.
During the conversation, Hall argued that many state policies fail to account for the needs of rural communities like St. Mary’s County.
“A lot of the legislation created in Annapolis doesn’t necessarily consider the rural nature of most of the state,” Hall said.
He asserted that legislation often reflects the priorities of larger urban areas, creating solutions that don’t always fit Southern Maryland.
Housing affordability became another focus of the discussion. Hall affirmed the region’s limited housing inventory and rising costs are real concerns but argued that local leaders need better data before implementing major development policies. He suggested the county develop a comprehensive housing plan to better understand housing needs at different income levels.
Hall also raised concerns about proposals that would give the state more control over local zoning decisions, saying rural communities should maintain authority over their own development. The conversation turned to potential data center development in Southern Maryland, with Hall contending that large projects should include clear communication with residents about energy demand and local impacts.
Hall closed by stressing fiscal responsibility, noting that Maryland’s multibillion-dollar state budget ultimately comes from taxpayers.
“When they say $70 billion is going to be spent, that’s $70 billion from Maryland taxpayers,” Hall said. “I want to watch your wallet and make sure Annapolis is providing the services that you deserve because you paid for it.”
