
COBB ISLAND, Md. — Hazmat crews responded Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, to a reported fuel spill after a boat sank in a residential waterway along the 12300 block of Neale Sound Drive on Cobb Island, authorities reported.
The incident was reported shortly before noon when a caller contacted emergency dispatch to report that a boat had sunk near the shoreline and appeared to be leaking gasoline. The caller also reported seeing multiple dead fish floating in the surrounding water.
Hazardous materials units and other emergency resources were dispatched to the scene, where responders confirmed the presence of a fuel spill and began containment efforts while assessing environmental conditions.
Officials noted that several units were initially placed on standby or returned due to staffing limitations, while remaining hazmat and rescue units continued operations. Authorities later confirmed the spill had been contained.
No injuries were reported, and officials indicated there were no patients associated with the incident. There was no immediate threat to nearby residents.
Following containment, hazmat officials notified the U.S. Coast Guard, which oversees fuel spills and environmental impacts in navigable waterways.
The incident was reported at 11:56 a.m. and cleared shortly after 1:15 p.m. The cause of the boat sinking was not immediately released, and the extent of any environmental impact remains under review.
