LA PLATA, Md. — In a heartfelt tribute to a beloved officer known for his kindness, family members, friends, and colleagues of Cpl. Jamel Clagett gathered recently to honor his memory with gestures that mirrored his own. The event, organized by Cpl. Clagett’s mother, Pat Swan-Tinsley, who also serves as a trustee for Maryland Concerns of Police Survivors, began with a meaningful act of service.
On a crisp morning, the group delivered breakfast to Charles County Sheriff’s Office district stations and the communications center. The gesture was a nod to Cpl. Clagett’s own legacy, as he had done the same for dispatchers on December 24, 2014, just hours before his life was tragically cut short in a car accident on Route 218 near Route 641 in King George, Virginia.

Following the breakfast deliveries, the group traveled to King George to visit the site of the accident. There, they placed a fresh wreath at Cpl. Clagett’s memorial, a somber yet uplifting moment as attendees reflected on his life and the values he embodied.
Cpl. Clagett, remembered for his generosity and compassion, left an indelible mark on the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and the community. His random acts of kindness, including the Christmas Eve breakfast for dispatchers, continue to inspire those who knew him.

“Delivering breakfast today reminds us of Jamel’s legacy and encourages us to be thoughtful and kind each day,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said.
The gesture was made possible through the support of Panera Bread in La Plata, which prepared the large breakfast order early in the day, and the King George County Sheriff’s Office, which provided an escort to the memorial site.
Photos of the event, shared by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, captured the poignancy of the day as the community celebrated the life of an officer who truly embodied the spirit of giving.
