HOLLYWOOD, Md. – This week, Historic Sotterley was honored to receive the Preservation Project Award from the St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Commission for the relocation and renovation of our Homestead House.

The Homestead House is critical to the expansion of our interpretation of Sotterley’s history, as it covers the post-Emancipation period of the site’s story. It has direct ties to several Sotterley descendant families, including Trustee Emeritus Donald Barber and his siblings, who were the last generation to live in the home.

It was moved in 2025 from a piece of property that used to be part of Sotterley, and is now located just past the Slave Quarters on Rolling Road. We are still in the midst of our preservation and restoration efforts, but visitors are welcome to view the outside and check in on our progress!

Thank you to the St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Commission for recognizing our work and sharing our mission with the community.
