HOLLYWOOD, Md. — A Hollywood man was charged after authorities reported he removed his GPS ankle monitor while assigned to home detention, according to court documents filed in St. Mary’s District Court.
Steven Allen Brooks, 38, of Hollywood, is charged with second-degree escape for violating a condition of release.
The charge stems from an incident reported May 22, 2026, after a St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched for a reported escape involving a person who had cut off his ankle monitor while on home detention, according to the application for statement of charges.
Court documents state the deputy responded to the Community Corrections Center and met with home detention staff from the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
Staff reported Brooks arrived at the Community Corrections Center for his scheduled weekly drug test and tested positive for cocaine during the initial screening, according to charging documents. Brooks was then instructed to remain in a designated room while awaiting a correctional officer to administer a secondary test.
Before the second test was administered, Brooks allegedly left the building without authorization, according to court documents.
Staff later reviewed monitoring records for Brooks’ GPS ankle device, which indicated he returned to his listed residence in Hollywood. Around 11:22 a.m., the device registered as having been tampered with and removed, according to charging documents.
A correctional officer responded to the residence, but Brooks was not present when the officer arrived.
Court documents state staff later spoke with Brooks by phone. During that conversation, Brooks allegedly admitted he left the residence in his personal vehicle after removing the ankle monitor.
Authorities reported Brooks stated he would report to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center to be detained for escape, but he failed to do so, according to the application for charges.
An arrest warrant was issued May 22 by Judge Tina Jenkins. Court records show the warrant was served May 26.
Brooks was ordered held without bond on May 26. A bail review hearing was held May 27 before Judge James Tanavage in St. Mary’s District Court, where Brooks remained held without bond.
A trial/officer scheduling hearing is set for July 7, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.
