ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Housing affordability is a top concern among Maryland voters heading into the 2026 elections.
A poll conducted by YouGov Blue for Greater Greater Washington, a progressive research and advocacy group, from Jan. 7 to 16, 2026, showed that almost three-fourths of Marylanders say there aren’t enough homes average people can afford.
Greater Greater Washington’s Feb. 4 press release showed the following results:
• 92% of Marylanders polled think the cost of renting or buying a home is a problem.
• 73% feel that Maryland does not have enough homes that are affordable for average people to buy or rent.
• When asked where more housing is needed, a majority of respondents say there should be more housing in cities, suburbs and rural communities throughout Maryland.
• Forty-seven percent of Marylanders are less likely to vote for state legislators who oppose policies to promote the construction of smaller, more affordable homes.
Maryland has seen steady increases in home prices over the last two years. A Zillow report claims that Maryland home prices are up 0.6% year over year in 2026. Statewide, home prices increased 45% between the first quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2025.
As of the October 2025 State of Housing & the Economy Report, the average home price in Maryland was $446,400. Monthly homeowner costs were $2,389, and the average renter cost was $1,721 per month.
Comptroller Brooke Lierman also indicated in the report that Maryland is losing young residents to states with more affordable housing options.
Housing in the Southern counties aligns with or exceeds statewide averages. The average home price for Calvert County is approximately $471,000. Charles County is approximately $443,000, and St. Mary’s County is $417,000, according to Zillow.
Those polled also said that high housing costs cut into other necessities and put a strain on retirement and other savings, and they would support pro-housing policies.

I moved out of Maryland years ago and never looked back, anyone that stays is foolish
They should be more worried about all the high grafters & fraudsters they elected into office, ruining their entire state, from top to bottom.
Your statement is correct. Boy it is bad too.
I want less government and less corporations, so we the people can thrive in a state. we the people need to take our sovereignty way more seriously. Government is not supposed to be your “daddy” and shouldn’t be forced to be either. I know I can make better decisions when I am not being bullied and intimidated by people and this government. We have to look at each other as human not problem. Offering help ups in the community not surveillance, freedom for all. It takes work and it is messy. Each of us must take our lives back by taking personal responsibility for your own future. we the people have a constitution and a bill of rights that needs to be protected right now! Then we can see how much money was wasted and we could start to solve our housing dilemmas. Big Picture.
