PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — December is designated driver month in Calvert County, and officials have followed the announcement with a host of initiatives and campaigns to help drivers make smarter choices around driving.
The Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) is partnering with the county on this initiative, which takes place from Dec. 1 to Jan. 2. This information is especially important during the holidays, when people are frequently on the road, may drive during atypical hours or consume alcohol outside of their homes.
“CAASA urges county residents to plan for a safe ride home if your celebrations involve alcohol or other substances that could affect your ability to drive safely. In addition, remember not to mix alcohol with other drugs, including prescription and recreational drugs,” the group wrote in a press release with the Calvert County Government.
Each year, Calvert County law enforcement officers make more than 400 impaired-driving arrests. Additionally, distracted driving-related accidents are believed to cause nearly 200 deaths in Maryland each year. Residents can access information about avoiding distracted driving as well as the importance of having a designated driver.
One of the recommended actions drivers can take is to drive S.M.A.R.T. This is a mnemonic device designed to help drivers remember simple tips for safe driving:
- Stay Focused: Watch out for farm vehicles, wildlife and construction zones.
- Make Preparations: Adjust your settings before hitting the road.
- Avoid All Other Activities: Driving is your only focus.
- Rely on Passengers: They can assist with navigation or other tasks. You focus on driving.
- Text or Talk Later: No text is worth a life.
