Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that he will conduct a telephone town hall meeting on Monday, July 28, from 6:30 โ€“ 7:30 p.m. that will focus on what Congress is doing to stimulate the economy, provide relief from rising gas prices and address the problems in the housing market. A relatively new technology, the telephone town hall allows citizens to participate in a live discussion with Congressman Hoyer – all from the convenience of their homes.

โ€œMaryland families are concerned about the skyrocketing price of gasoline, the problems in the housing market, and the loss of jobs in the current economic slowdown,โ€ said Rep. Hoyer. โ€œAs Congress works to address these issues, I invite residents of Marylandโ€™s Fifth Congressional District to join me for a telephone town hall for the opportunity to hear from me and to voice their own concerns and questions.โ€

The telephone town hall operates like a large-scale conference call between Rep. Hoyer and potentially thousands of citizens living in Marylandโ€™s Fifth Congressional District (Calvert, Charles and St. Maryโ€™s counties and portions of Prince Georgeโ€™s and Anne Arundel counties). At the outset of the upcoming town hall, tens of thousands of households will receive a direct call from Rep. Hoyer inviting them to participate. Call recipients then have the option of staying on the line to hear opening remarks from Rep. Hoyer, followed by the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session.

To guarantee participation, citizens can dial in at (877) 229-8493 and enter the pin number 12897. Rep. Hoyerโ€™s previous town hall meetings, in May and September of 2007, drew as many as 3,800 participants.

โ€œThe dialogue between elected officials and those they represent is critical,โ€ said Hoyer. โ€œI hope that citizens will take this opportunity to join the discussion by participating in my next telephone town hall.โ€
