PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — If you or a fellow community member is in need of winter clothes, The Giving Closet is hosting a free winter clothing distribution event this Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at NewLife Christian Church at 3170 German Chapel Road in Prince Frederick.

This is the only day for the event, and participants must bring their own bags to fill with clothes. Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing will be available. All the clothes are free, and while you can fill a bag, you can also just look for specific items you need.

Coat drives and winter clothing events take place throughout the season to help people stay warm in the cold winter months. Cold weather can be especially dangerous for the unhoused or anyone with limited resources who may resort to unsafe heating methods or limit their heating. Churches like NewLife often host clothing drives and distribution days to help those in need, hosted by the church itself or in partnership with other nonprofits.

If you’re looking for a place to donate winter clothing, check with local schools or police and fire departments in addition to churches. Numerous organizations host these drives throughout the winter, and it’s a positive way to contribute to the community and get rid of winter clothes that no longer fit or items where you may have multiples.

Most drives also accept new clothes, so if you really want to donate, you can purchase items to contribute, too. Check with each organization to see what their requirements are.
