SOUTHERN MARYLAND – These creatures sound like every arachnophobe’s worst nightmare. Venomous, with the ability to glide through the air, and legs that can reach up to four inches long (which, when fully extended, can be as big as a human hand), the Trichonephila clavata, also known as the Joro spider, is making its way along the East Coast. But how concerned should we Southern Marylanders be? According to researchers, these spiders shouldn’t cause too much concern.

Michael Raupp, an Entomology Professor from the University of Maryland, notes that Joro spiders, originally from Asia, were previously spotted in Maryland’s Anne Arundel County and Howard County in 2023. So it shouldn’t be a surprise if we see them again this year. When it comes to the tri-county area, it may not be as likely due to their tendency to migrate more toward the north, but don’t rule out the possibility.

It is believed that Joro spiders have been abundant in Georgia for quite some time now. It’s not exactly clear how they got here, but theories suggest they may have arrived via cargo ships or even luggage.

With their unique ability to glide through wind tunnels, otherwise known as ballooning, Joro spiders have managed to spread across the East Coast quite rapidly.

But should you be afraid?

Joro spiders are venomous, yes; however, their fangs are too small to cause any real damage to humans and pets. Their venom is also non-lethal. Plus, they’re reportedly a non-aggressive species.

These spiders also reportedly like to feast on stinkbugs and spotted lanternflies. So, the Joro spider may help clear up some of the other ongoing pest problems.

Joro spiders have reached an estimated population in the millions already, so they’re here to stay. However, there are concerns about how the Joro spider’s massive invasion may threaten indigenous species. Efforts are reportedly underway to research the Joro spider to find ways to help mitigate the spread.

  1. Hopefully they will land at the White House first, followed by the capital building, then Annapolis
