LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Kenny’s Flowers, a beloved family-run business that has served the St. Mary’s County community for close to six decades, will close its doors at both Lexington Park and Leonardtown locations on Dec. 31, 2024.

Owner Julie Wathen Pitt made the announcement in a heartfelt message expressing gratitude to the loyal customers who have supported the business throughout its history.

“We have shared in the joys and sorrows of our customers and feel we have been an important part in their special moments throughout their lives,” Pitt said in her statement. “We thank you all for your patronage throughout the years, and it has been our pleasure providing you our services.”

Kenny’s Flowers was established by Pitt’s father around 1967. The business became a cornerstone of the community, offering floral arrangements for countless weddings, birthdays, funerals, and other milestones. Pitt, who grew up immersed in the floral industry, reflected on the meaningful connections forged through decades of service.

“It’s just been a family business, and we’ve been very blessed, very fortunate,” Pitt said in an interview. “It’s so nice to get to know the community. You see them grow and live, do some wonderful things, and have children; if you get lucky, you do the children’s weddings.”

Pitt described the experience of running Kenny’s Flowers as a labor of love, where she not only honed her craft but also became deeply connected with the community.

“You really feel like you know people, and that’s been one of the best parts about it,” she said.

While the official closure is set for Dec. 31, Pitt said she will remain at the stores for a short period afterward to finalize operations and liquidate inventory.

“I will be here probably for close to a couple of weeks,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of nice things that we’ve accumulated over such a long time period, and I’m hoping a lot of people will come by and see me.”

The decision to close marks a significant milestone for Pitt, who has spent nearly 46 years at the helm of the business. She characterized the closure as part of her transition into retirement.

Kenny’s Flowers will leave a lasting legacy in St. Mary’s County, remembered not only for its vibrant floral arrangements but also for its role in the lives of generations of families.
