CALIFORNIA, Md. — Kohl’s has announced significant real estate changes for 2025, including the closure of 27 underperforming stores by April and the San Bernardino, California, E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC) in May. The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining a strong and profitable store base, leaving locations like Waldorf and California, Maryland, unaffected by the closures.

The San Bernardino EFC, which has been operational since 2010, is set to close when its lease expires in May 2025. This facility is one of 15 distribution centers in Kohl’s supply chain network. According to the company, advances in technology at newer EFCs and the ability to fulfill customer orders from stores have reduced the reliance on the San Bernardino facility.

In addition to the EFC closure, Kohl’s will shutter 27 stores by April 2025. The closures, spread across 15 states, target underperforming locations. The company stated that affected employees have been notified and offered severance packages or opportunities to apply for other roles within Kohl’s.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s chief executive officer. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Despite these closures, Kohl’s reiterated confidence in the strength of its store network, which includes more than 1,150 locations nationwide. Stores in Waldorf and California, Maryland, remain open, signaling stability for local shoppers and employees.

The list of stores set to close includes locations in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and other states. Kohl’s has not announced plans for additional closures beyond this round.
