LA PLATA, Md. — On Friday, Oct. 10, personnel from the La Plata Police Department and members of American Legion Post 82’s Legion Riders made a special visit to honor U.S. Marine Corps veteran Gayanne Graham, who served during the Vietnam War and later worked 40 years as a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy.

The recognition was arranged through American Legion Post 82 after Graham’s family reached out to request a visit. The Legion Riders quickly organized a ride to her home, escorted by the La Plata Police Department, to celebrate her decades of dedication and service.

La Plata Mayor Jeannine James also joined the group, where Graham was presented with framed memorabilia and heartfelt thanks from the community.

American Legion Rider John Flatley said it was an honor to visit Graham, noting, “Gayanne was medically separated from the Marine Corps but she wasn’t done serving. When her family reached out that morning, it wasn’t hard to round up an ALR ride. We shared a moment filled with smiles and a few tears.”

About the American Legion Riders

The American Legion Riders (ALR) is a motorcycle-based program under The American Legion umbrella. Membership is open to members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion who also own legally registered motorcycles.

Riders often escort funeral processions or honor ceremonies for veterans to ensure respect and solemnity. They participate in charity rides, community events and fundraising efforts supporting veterans and their families. One of their signature national activities is the American Legion Legacy Run, which raises scholarships for children of military personnel killed in the post-9/11 era and supports the Veterans & Children Foundation.

Locally, Post 82’s Legion Riders in La Plata are active in veteran outreach and community support across Southern Maryland.
