BALTIMORE – The National Weather Service has issued a warning for light freezing rain expected to impact parts of the region Tuesday, December 24, 2024. Commuters and holiday travelers should prepare for hazardous conditions, especially on untreated and elevated surfaces.
Precipitation will begin between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the Alleghenies, spreading to the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metro areas between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. The National Weather Service advises that even a thin glaze of ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks could create treacherous travel conditions. Light freezing drizzle may persist into the evening, with precipitation ending between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
In preparation for the icy weather, the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is conducting pretreatment operations across the state. Crews are applying salt brine to roadways, particularly in areas where precipitation will begin as snow.
MDOT SHA advises motorists to check the Statewide Transportation Operations Resource Map (STORM) for updates on equipment locations and real-time weather information. For drivers who must travel, officials emphasize the following safety guidelines:
- Slow down. Speed limits are designed for dry conditions.
- Use caution on elevated surfaces. Bridges, ramps, and overpasses freeze first.
- Don’t crowd the plow. Allow plenty of space for State Highway Administration equipment.
- Clear your vehicle. Remove all snow and ice from hoods and roofs to prevent hazards to other motorists.
- Move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles – It’s the law.

Officials encourage delaying non-essential travel during peak freezing conditions and stress vigilance for those on the road. The system is expected to clear by midday Wednesday, providing relief for holiday plans.
