Delaney Hart, a 6th grade student in Ms. Kelly Schmidt’s class at Margaret Brent Middle School, won the Optimist Club of Mechanicsville’s essay contest in February. Hartโs winning essay based on a theme of “The Power of Youth.”
Hart was awarded a Gold Medal and $150 in Savings Bonds for the honor. In addition, the essay was sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the District / State.ย I am proud to announce that Ms. Delaney Hartโs essay was awarded 2nd place in the District / State essay contest. The announcement was made at the Maryland South Delawareโsย Quarterly District Convention on May 2.
โThis outstanding achievement should not go unrecognized! I feel that a 6th grade student taking second place out 339 contestants, which mostly comprised of HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, is outstanding! The District / Stateโs 1st place winner, Mr. Tyler Weyant was a senior in High School. Weyant, a Hartford County resident, plans to study journalism at the University of Maryland.
Weyantโs winning essay was sent to the international-level contest. Mr. Weyantโs essay placed 3rd overall in the Optimist International Contest held in May. He was awarded a $2,250 College Scholarship and a plaque for his achievement.ย
“Ms. Hart did a wonderful job and our club is very proud that she represented us in the District / State contest. I couldnโt ask for a better result considering her competition, Ms. Hart is an amazing young lady.” Club President Elliott Lawrence, Jr. said.
Hart was presented a plaque for her efforts at Margaret Brentโs June 8, 6th Grade Awards Ceremonies. Hart also was presented many other class awards from her classroom achievements including an award for having straight Aโs the entire school year.

The Optimist Club of Mechanicsville has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for 14 years and has been active in the community since 1982. Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include Project Graduation, Shop with a Cop, Special Olympics and many other community based projects.
