LA PLATA, Md. — The Marie’s Diner family and the Charles County community are mourning the loss of Sandy Hammonds, affectionately known as “Grandma,” who died on Monday, July 21.
For more than four decades, Sandy was a beloved fixture at Marie’s Diner in La Plata. She celebrated 40 years of service in April 2021, marking a milestone that reflected her commitment to the diner and the community she touched throughout the years. Her friendly smile and kind conversations made her a cherished part of daily life for countless regulars.

Even her work shirt proudly read “Grandma” — a small detail that spoke volumes to those who knew her best. It wasn’t just a name; it was who she was to everyone who walked through the doors.

In a heartfelt post shared by the diner, her colleagues wrote, “We know she brightened the lives of us all. Our thoughts are with her family.”
Sandy Hammonds leaves behind a lasting impact on everyone who knew her — a reminder that the simplest acts of kindness can leave a lasting legacy.
An outpouring of love is filling the pages of her obituary at Raymond Funeral Service, where friends, family and patrons are leaving tributes in her memory.
