LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — As of Wednesday morning at roughly 10 a.m., the Maryland Department of Health(MDH) is confirming a total of 5,529 cases of the novel coronavirus(COVID-19) across the state of Maryland, while there are going to be more results that are presumably still waiting to be confirmed.

This new total means there are 1,158 newly confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, which is now the largest single day jump in cases in the state to date. This follows to consecutive days of flattening data, showing relative slowing of the spread.

Of the confirmed cases, over 1,210 people have ever been hospitalized, and 104 of those were recorded in the past day.

365 previously infected people have been released from their isolation according to MDH, 77 of which have been recorded in the past day.

21 people in the state have died from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s death toll unfortunately up to 124.

Negative test results also grew, with at least 5,677 negative confirmations in the past day, bring that total to 32,933.

At this time, there are 292 officially confirmed cases in the Southern Maryland region. Charles County saw their previously confirmed total of 136 cases rise to 164. In Calvert County, MDH has confirmed 15 more official cases overnight, bringing their total up to 56. St. Mary’s County now counts cases on a rolling basis, and records from the county show a total of 72 cases now, which is up 10 from Tuesday.

A majority of the positive cases across the state are still found in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County. Both counties now have confirmed over 1,000 cases of COVID-19. PG County has officially has the most of any county in the state, with an overnight increase of at least 290 cases bringing the total to 1,310.

Since yesterday, Montgomery County saw an increase of at least 217 newly recorded cases, bringing their total to at least 1,088.

Anne Arundel County has also confirmed 98 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing their official total to 468.

On April 7, the total number of confirmed cases by the Maryland Department of Health was at least 4,383. As of April 8, that recorded number is at least 5,539, showing over a 26.3% increase across the state in the past 24 hours. With totals rising everyday, seeing a percentage increase of this magnitude when compared to previously declining numbers might be concerning to some.

The Maryland Department of Health is confirming the following demographic breakdown of the cases, showing that the largest group to be impacted is adults under 65 years of age:

0-9: 27
10-19: 109
20-29: 625
30-39: 968
40-49: 1,015
