Maryland’s Oldest Man, Chester Meros, Dies Days Before 111th Birthday

BROOKLYN PARK, Md. — An 110-year-old Maryland man named Chester Meros passed away on July 9, just five days before he would have turned 111. In his youth, Chester Meros was a coal miner and welder, affording him a wealth of experience in various fields. He helped build hundreds of ships during World War II while working for Bethlehem Steel, a job he stayed in until retiring in his 60s in 1977.

Meros was born on July 14, 1915. Last year, he underwent age validation, proving his age as a matter of fact. At the time of his passing, Chester Meros was the oldest known man living in Maryland.

Not only was Meros the oldest man in Maryland, but he also held the title of second-oldest known man in the United States. He lived in Brooklyn Park for seven decades, though he was born in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania.

Known widely as a “supercentenarian” after reaching the age of 110 in 2025, Meros is remembered for having a positive personality and a fondness for music, travel and spending time with his family. He was an avid singer and even helped form “The Meros Brothers,” a band that performed at various local events and venues.

Meros was married to his wife, Helen, for 70 years and found a passion for crabbing in Maryland waters, an exciting hobby that he continued to engage in until he was 89 years old.

Upon Meros’ passing, Arthur Green assumed the title of oldest known man in Maryland at 109 years old. Dorothy Mimms remains the oldest known woman and person in the state at the age of 113 years old as of July 2026.
